IRMA members
Currently 65 refractories manufacturing companies in India are members of the IRMA. There are also 19 units as associate members producing equipment, accessories, instruments and raw materials used in refractory manufacture. 

Product range 
Member companies produce firebricks, high alumina, alumina carbon, silica, basic, zircon, zircon mullite, silicon carbide refractories as also speciality products like monolithics, slide gate plate and auxillieries, continuous casting refractories and so on. These refractory products have applications in various types and zones of high temperature kilns and furnaces in steel, cement, glass, non-ferrous and such other industries.

Production capacity
The aggregate refractories production capacity in India is 2, 000,000 metric tonnes per annum. The actual production however was about 1,00,000 metric tonnes  in the previous year and is about 1,200,000 metric tonnes in the current year. This is consumed to the extent of 74% in the steel industry, about 12% in the cement industry, 4% for glass manufacture, 3% each in ceramics production and in non-ferrous metals, and the balance in other industries.

R & D
The refractories manufacturing companies have regular R&D setup and programmes. Besides in-house research, troubleshooting and product up-gradation, collaborative research is also undertaken jointly with research and academic institutions. In addition, several companies have technical collaboration agreements or joint production ventures with world renowned organisations.

Exports
Many of the member units are exporting their products to different countries of the world, from Australia to South-east Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Europe, USA and even to South America. Exports of refractories from India have grown at an average rate of 20% per annum over the last 6 years. Several of the units have received ISO 9000 accredition and many are registered as approved vendors with a number of well-known design, engineering and consultancy organisations.
